Today we are launching Defineagram, a daily word puzzle that combines definition clues with anagram solving.

Defineagram gives you a word definition — including part of speech and phonetic pronunciation — along with a pool of scrambled letters. Some letters belong to the answer. Others are decoys. Your job is to figure out which word the definition describes and spell it correctly from the available letters.

How It Works

Each puzzle presents three pieces of information:

  • A definition. A clear, dictionary-style definition of the target word, including the part of speech (noun, verb, adjective, etc.).
  • A letter pool. A set of scrambled letters that includes all letters of the answer plus several decoy letters.
  • The word length. The number of letter slots to fill, shown as empty boxes.

You select letters from the pool to spell out the word. If you guess wrong, the game adds a 5-second time penalty and clears your attempt so you can try again. There is no limit on wrong guesses — the only cost is time.

Hints

Each puzzle includes up to three hints that you can reveal at any time. Hints might tell you the first letter of the word, a synonym, or an additional context clue. Each hint adds a 10-second time penalty.

Hints are designed to help you make progress without giving the answer away. They narrow the solution space while still requiring you to make the final connection.

Scoring

Defineagram uses time-based scoring. A timer starts counting up when you begin the puzzle. Your final time is the elapsed time plus any penalties.

Wrong guesses add a +5 second penalty each. Hints add a +10 second penalty each. There is no lose condition — the puzzle stays open until you solve it. Lower total times earn better results.

Daily Puzzles

A new Defineagram puzzle is available every day at midnight Eastern Time. Difficulty varies — some days feature common words with tricky definitions, while others use less common vocabulary with straightforward clues.

The game tracks your streak (consecutive days solved), best time, and average time across all completed puzzles.

How to Solve Faster

Pay attention to the part of speech in the definition. If it says "noun" you can immediately rule out verb-only words, and vice versa. The phonetic pronunciation is another strong hint — it tells you the number of syllables.
